UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Sarah Blythe-Wood was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after scoring in each of the Richmond field hockey team's contests against Top-10 ranked teams last week.
Blythe-Wood scored against No. 8 Virginia last Wednesday and her goal against No. 3 ranked Wake Forest on Sunday pulled Richmond within one at 4-3 late in the second half.
The Spiders only trailed No. 3 Wake Forest 4-3 with under seven minutes to play before giving up two goals on penalty corners in the closing minutes for a 6-3 final outcome.
Blythe-Wood is second on the team with four goals and third on the team with eight points.
Blythe-Wood is Richmond's second Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award winner of the fall, joining senior Sarah Schrott. Freshman Katelin Peterson has been named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week twice.
Richmond opens Atlantic 10 play on Friday when the Spiders host defending Atlantic 10 champion Massachusetts. The Spiders had their run of five-straight Atlantic 10 titles snapped in the semifinals of the conference tournament last fall in a 1-0 loss to the Minutewomen.
The Spiders closed non-conference play with four-straight games against nationally-ranked opponents, including a 2-1 win over No. 14 American. Richmond is 3-8, but six of the Spiders losses are to nationally ranked teams.
