University of Richmond, Va. -
The women's basketball squad opens its home slate versus Kennesaw State tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center. The Spiders fell to DT3 66-64, in their only exhibition game of the season. Sophomore Brittani Shells led all scorers with 17 points.
The Spiders are anxious to start the season, and look forward to opening their 2008-09 schedule at home.
"Kennesaw State is a very athletic team who is returning all five starters and are picked second in their conference," said head coach Michael Shafer. "They do a really good job of pressuring teams into turnovers and quick shots, spurring their transition offense."
In the only meeting of the series, Richmond edged Kennesaw State 61-60. Junior Katie Holzer made one of two free throws with seven seconds to secure the win for the Spiders. Johanna McKnight led Richmond in scoring with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Kennesaw State is coming off a 101-79 exhibition victory over Columbus State. The Owls welcome back reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year Britteny Henderson. Henderson led all scorers with 24 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
"We have a tremendous challenge in front of us on Friday because we are going to have to limit turnovers in our first game," said Shafer. "We are also going to have to do a great job of stopping penetration."
Live coverage on SpiderTV with video streaming will be available for the game. Fans can follow Matt Smith on ESPN Radio 950 for play-by-play action.
