FARMVILLE, Va. -
Richmond (4-0) cruised to its fourth straight victory with a 72-47 romp over in-state rival Longwood University (2-3) Tuesday night. Sophomore Brittani Shells led the Spiders with 15 points. Richmond dished out a season-high 16 assists, and outrebounded the Longwood Lancers 30-26.
"We showed great offensive patience," head coach Michael Shafer said. "We got the looks we wanted and we shot the ball well."
Richmond broke out of the first half with a 14-2 run, and never lost the lead. Thanks to Shells' perfect 3-for-3 shooting in the first half, the Spiders held a comfortable 35-24 lead at the break.
"We played well together," said Shafer. "Having 16 assists to nine turnovers shows we are playing together and having fun."
Junior Danielle Bell finished her night with 13 points, going 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Sophomore Crystal Goring added to the cause with nine points, three blocks and five rebounds. Freshman Sam Bilney continued her true freshman form by dishing out a career-best four assists to go along with six points.
Brittani Billups paced the Lancers with 15 points.
The Spiders travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. this weekend for the Double Tree Holiday Classic. Richmond faces off against Troy University Friday night. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
