HUNTINGTON, W.V. - The Richmond women's basketball team jumped out to a 46-16 halftime lead on its way to a 74-49 victory over Marshall on Saturday at the Cam Henderson Center.
Senior Johanna McKnight scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half, when the Spiders (9-1) shot 73.1 percent from the field. Freshmen Samantha Bilney had 11 points and freshmen Rachael Bilney scored eight of her 10 points before the break.
"We played incredibly well in the first half, evident by shooting 73 percent from the floor," Richmond head coach Michael Shafer said. "It's very good to get a road win."
The Spiders held Marshall to 16 points in the first 20 minutes, forcing 15 first-half turnovers and allowing the Herd to take just 16 field goal attempts.
"What I was pleased with was how our team focuses on our preparation for Marshall and it carried over into the game," Shafer said.
Richmond senior Augustina Zygaite had eight points, making 4-of-4 field goals, grabbing three rebounds and dishing out three assists.
"I'm pleased with the contribution that Auggie gave coming off the bench," Shafer said.
Freshman Danielle Bell scored eight points and had three assists, while sophomore Joyous Tharrington had four points and two assists.
Richmond heads to Philadelphia to play Drexel on Monday at 1 p.m., followed by a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for the Alabama Invitational (Dec. 29-30). The Spiders return home to host No. 15 ranked Maryland on Jan. 3 at 3 p.m.
