VMI Overtakes Spiders, 73-70

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond led by seven with just over three minutes to play, but VMI outscored the Spiders 15-5 over the final 3:06 to win 73-70 at Cameron Hall.
VMI's Chavis Holmes scored the Keydets final 15 points, making two three-pointers, a jumper and 7-of-7 free throws.
Richmond had led since the 8:36 mark in the second half and with just over three minutes to play had the nation's leading scoring team (99.3 ppg) stuck on 58 points.
But that's when Chavis Holmes took over, scoring 15 of his 23 points in the final 3:06 as the Keydets improved to 10-2.
The Spiders dropped to 7-6 on the season, with five of the six losses coming by seven point or less and four of them coming by five points or less.
"We played well defensively and we played hard," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "But in the end I think they executed a little bit better than us."
Richmond sophomore Kevin Anderson scored 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Anderson also had five rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes.
Junior David Gonzalvez scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds, had three assists and two steals. Senior Jarhon Giddings scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and junior Ryan Butler had 10 points and five boards.
Sophomore Justin Harper battled foul trouble, but had seven points and four rebounds in 13 minutes. Freshman Francis-Cedric Martel had a career-high seven rebounds to go with four points, three assists, two blocks and two steals in a career-high 26 minutes.
The Spiders return home to host Rice on Saturday at noon in the first game of a doubleheader with the women's team, which hosts Maryland at 3 p.m.
