BOONE, N.C. - University of Richmond senior DE Lawrence Sidbury, Jr. was honored Friday by the Touchdown Club of Richmond as the Commonwealth of Virginia's most outstanding Division I Defensive Lineman. Sidbury's award marks the second-straight year a Spider has garnered a prestigious TD Club award.
Sidbury and the seventh-ranked Spiders (10-3) play in the Quarterfinals of the 2008 FCS Playoffs on Saturday with a noon ET match-up at second-ranked Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.
An All-American candidate and a two-time First Team All-CAA Football performer, Sidbury anchored one of the best defensive units in the FCS. The senior currently leads the team with career-highs in sacks (7.5), tackles for loss (16.0) and forced fumbles (3) this season. Both the sacks and TFL ranked fourth in the CAA.
For his career, Sidbury's 16.5 sacks stand seventh on Richmond's all-time list.
The Spiders enter Saturday's quarterfinal ranked fifth in the FCS in total defense (251.0 yards/game), are sixth in scoring defense (16.2 points/game) and 15th in rushing defense (98.5 yards/game). Richmond has held six-consecutive opponents - and 10 this season - to less than 100 yards rushing.
Sidbury joined Virginia Tech CB Victor Harris (Defensive Back/Linebacker), Virginia OT Eugene Monroe (Offensive Lineman/End) and James Madison QB Rodney Landers (Offensive Back), who were the four position-players honored by the Touchdown Club of Richmond.
These four players (along with four honorees from the Division II/III/NAIA level) will be honored by the Touchdown Club at the Dudley Award Banquet scheduled for Thursday, December 11, 6:30pm at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
The winner of the Dudley Award as well as the NCAA Division II, III/NAIA College Player of the Year will be announced at the Dudley Award Banquet.
Last season, former Spider All-American Tim Hightower earned the TD Club's Offensive Back of the Year Award and was the runner-up for the Dudley Award to former Virginia DL Chris Long.
