UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior David Gonzalvez scored 20 points for the second-straight game and sophomore Kevin Anderson had 19 points as the Richmond men's basketball team defeated Delaware State 76-66 Saturday night in the Robins Center.
The Spiders improved to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the Robins Center. Richmond shot 50 percent from the field, led by Gonzalvez making 9-of-16 field goals.
Anderson made 6-of-11 field goals and Giddings mad 6-of-9 for 14 points, along with grabbing five rebounds. Redshirt freshman Josh Duinker scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds and three assists.
Freshman Francis-Cedric Martel scored a career-high eight points, making both his three point attempts.
The Spiders led 35-22 at the half and led by 16 in the second half, but never put the Hornets away.
"A win is a win, but we need to get better," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "We still aren't making enough hustle plays, we aren't grabbing enough rebounds, grabbing enough loose balls.
Richmond was out-rebounded 38-27, but did force 21 turnovers and grab 12 steals.
We have a week to work on a few things, that should help us," Mooney said.
The Spiders host VCU in the Farm Bureau Insurance Black & Blue Classic next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Robins Center.
