The Spiders will host the Rams of Rhode Island for Richmond's "Dream Big Day." Over 700 students will be attending the match-up from nine different area schools where they will attend a pre-game educational seminar put on by various members of Richmond's athletic department. Richmond and Rhode Island will be battling to move into sixth position in the Atlantic 10.
The Spiders are coming off a one-and-one week last week, getting the win at St. Bonaventure, 62-48, then falling to No. 14 GW 78-51. Against the Bonnies, the Spiders shot over 50% for the third time this season, giving them a perfect record when shooting above the .500 mark. Freshman Brittani Shells led Richmond in both of its games last week, scoring 18 against the Bonnies then 21 at GW.
The Spiders lead the all-time series with the Rams 7-2. Head coach Johanna McKnight led Richmond in the win with 14 points while Nikita Thomas added 10 and 12 points respectively.
The Rams are coming off wins against Fordham and UMass last week. Rhode Island defeated Fordham, 57-55, then got the W over UMass, 75-64. Safi Mojidi currently paces the Rams averaging 14.1 ppg. She is the only member of the Rhode Island squad that averages double-figures.
Freshman Brittani Shells has started the 2007-08 with a bang. The native of Camden, Delaware has led the Spiders in all but three of their home games. Against Georgia, the Spiders' first game of the season, Shells put up 13 points, then against Fairfield recorded a career-high 27 points. The freshman then tied her career-high in the Spiders' loss to Maryland 89-59. She was selected to the Terrapin Classic's All-Tournament team by coaches and media. The freshman now leads the Spiders with 14 ppg.
Up Next: Richmond continues play at the Robins Center as the Spiders host Saint Joseph's Saturday, February 16 for at 7 p.m. ET. Saturday night's game is Richmond's "Think Pink" game, where fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game and contributions will be made to breast cancer research.
