Richmond hosts Saint Joseph's Saturday, February 16 at 7 p.m. ET for the Spiders' "Think Pink" game. The NCAA and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) have encouraged institutions to participate in the "Think Pink" initiative to help support breast cancer research. The Richmond women's basketball team will show their support by sporting pink t-shirts before the game, all fans are also encouraged to wear pink to the game.
The Spiders are coming off their first 30-point win since Nov. 2005 when Richmond took down Hampton, 77-47. Wednesday, the Spiders rolled past Rhode Island 68-38. Three Richmond players recorded double-figures in the victory. Crystal Goring recorded her first career double-double in Richmond's win over the Rams. The freshman, out of Trinidad, pulled down 14 rebounds and scored 12 points.
The all-time series between the Hawks and the Spiders is an even 4-4. The two teams first met in 1987 when Richmond was coached by Stephanie Gaitley. Most recently, the two teams went head-to-head last January in the SJU Fieldhouse where the Spiders came away victorious, 64-57. Now-sophomore Katie Holzer paced the Spiders in the win with 18 points while Johanna McKnight contributed 13 and 10 points respectively.
The Hawks are also 5-4 in A-10 play and are tied with the Spiders for sixth position in the conference. Most recently St. Joe's fell at Charlotte in a close, 59-57 contest Tuesday, Feb 12. Amy Wold led the Hawks in the loss with 11 points. Sarah Acker currently paces the Hawks in the season averaging 12.5 ppg.
McKnight led the Spiders in their most recent win over Rhode Island, 68-38. The redshirt junior recorded 16 points to pace Richmond while two other teammates recorded in the double-figures. Both Brittani Shells and Crystal Goring contributed 12 points a piece.
The Spiders have lost only one game this season when leading at halftime. Temple is the only team to come back in the second half to beat Richmond, 47-40.
Up Next: The Spiders are on the road again, this time heading up to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Flyers February 20 for a 7 p.m. ET start. Richmond will return to the Robins Center for a Saturday matinee as the Spiders host Duquesne, February 23 at 2 p.m. ET.
