Under first-year head coach Mark McQueen, the 93rd season of Richmond baseball is underway, with the Spiders hosting Longwood at Pitt Field Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m., with live video streaming and Gametracker available at RichmondSpiders.com.
Richmond, a preseason No. 2 selection in the Atlantic 10, finished third in the conference last season with a 32-28 record overall (12-9 in A-10 play). Charlotte, which won both the regular-season and toutnament titles last year, was picked to repeat in 2008.
McQueen, the 2003 Collegiate Baseball National Pitching Coach of the Year, takes the Spiders' helm after 13 years with the program as an assistant coach. He started at UR in 1989, moved to VCU as an assistnt from 2001-06 and returned to the Spiders before last season. In all, 24 pitchers coached by McQueen have been drafted, including 16 from Richmond. McQueen is a 1984 graduate of Sam Houston State and began is coaching career at Iowa State in 1987.
After missing all last season with an injury, redshirt junior RF Ryan Metzroth (pictured) had a moster weekend in Jacksonville and was named the A-10 Player of the Week for his efforts. Metzroth belted a pair of homers and drove in six of Richmond's 23 runs in the UNCW win Friday. The Agoura Hills, Calif. native also walked twice, reaching base seven times and scored five times in the game. Metzroth finished the weekend batting .583 (seven-for-12), struck out just twice and drew a team-leading four walks. His slugging percentage after three games stands at an eye-popping 1.083.

Today's game marks the second game of six-straight for the Spiders at Pitt Field. This weekend, Bucknell and Seton Hall visit Richmond. In all, nine of the Spiders' next 10 games will be played in the West End.
