UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's lacrosse team will host in-state rival William and Mary Sunday, March 2, for a 2 p.m. ET game at First Market Stadium. Meetings between the Tribe and the Spiders are always competitive. Two of their four last meetings have gone into overtime, where the Spiders were able to walk away with the victory. One year, the Tribe overcame the Spiders and another year, Richmond won handedly.
Sunday will mark the Spiders' fifth straight home game since opening the 2008 season. Richmond has yet to play on the road this spring. The Spiders beat out Longwood in their season opener, 21-11. Junior, Allison Furstenburg put on an impressive performance earning 10 points, six goals and four assists.
In Richmond's next three games, the Spiders faced two top-10 programs and a west-coast team who has now broken into the top-20. Richmond fell to No. 3 Duke in their second game of the season, then turned around two days later as it dropped to now-No.19 Oregon.
Earlier in the week, No. 2 Virginia's eight scorers beat out the Spiders, 16-7. Mandy Friend led the Spiders earning four points, two goals and two assists. Furstenburg also recorded a hat trick for Richmond in the loss.
Last year against at William and Mary, the Spiders sent the game into double-overtime, where they walked away with a 10-9 decision. Ashley Friend lifted Richmond over the Tribe putting in three goals, including the game-winner.
The Tribe is coming into Sunday's game, 2-2 on the season, earning wins over Longwood and Binghamton and dropping to Virginia Tech and Duke.
William and Mary was held to just two goals in the second half in its most recent contest against the Hokies. Virginia Tech came away with a 11-7 win over the Tribe.
After Sunday's game, the Spiders hit the road to play three straight away games. First stop for Richmond is Blacksburg, Va. where the Spiders will take on the Hokies Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. ET.
