CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Richmond women's tennis team defeated South Carolina State 4-3 at a dual in Charleston, S.C. The match opened with the Spiders taking the doubles point with solid play from all 3 teams, with wins coming from the consistent No.1 duo of Pamela Duran and Ashlee Vosters as well as the No. 3 team of freshmen Kelly Tidwell and Isabel Arana. That important point set the tone for the afternoon matches.
Following the doubles action, came tough, competitive matches on all courts. The Spiders' momentum continued with a solid performance from freshman, Pamela Duran followed quickly with another impressive win from the #1 position over Miriam Cruz 7-5, 6-2. Next, junior, Erin Clark, came back from an 0-3 deficit in the first set to capture the winning match over Sarni Torres, 7-5,6-1.
The remaining three matches played by Ashlee Vosters, Jelena Zivanovic were nail-biters as they came down to the wire with the Lady Bulldogs prevailing.
"I was extremely happy with the aggressive play that the team showed on all courts today," head coach Mark Wesselink commented. "We fought to the end for every line, and showed real improvement in competing for the elusive doubles point. Hard work in practice and more match play is starting to show in our results."
The team's next match is scheduled for Tuesday, March 11 against the College of Charleston.
