No. 2 Terps Hold Off Richmond

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Claire Cunniff scored four goals on her four shots as the Spiders fell to No. 2 Maryland, 17-9. Junior Mandy Friend hit the back of the net three times and added two assists for a total of five points against the Terps. Jules Nicola and Allison Furstenburg both added a goal a piece to make up the Spiders' nine goals on the night.
The Terps started off the scoring for the night with a goal from Katie Princiotto off a helper from Kelly Kasper just two minutes into the game. However, Richmond did not fall back answering with two straight goals to put the Spiders a head 2-1.
Scoring the Spiders' first goal was freshman Jules Nicola with an assist from Allison Furstenburg. Less than two minutes later, Friend scored her first goal of the night assisted by classmate Lexie Marrocco. Friend finished the game with three goals on her five shots.
Maryland answered the Spiders' run with six straight goals to put Richmond down 7-2 before earning its third goal of the game. The Terps led at halftime 8-4.
To start off the second half, Maryland went on a five goal run to get a seven goal advantage over the Spiders. Richmond finally got on the board in the second half over ten minutes into play with a goal from Claire Cunniff. The senior, native of Maryland, scored four of the Spiders' five goals in the second half.
On the defensive end for the Spiders, senior Mandy Friend to lead the team.
Richmond falls to 2-5 so far in its 2008 schedule. The Spiders have yet to face off against an Atlantic 10 opponent. Four of the Spiders' five losses have come against ACC teams, Virginia, Duke, Maryland and Virginia Tech.
Spring break rolls on for Richmond as the Spiders continue to play on the road, heading to James Madison Saturday, March 12 for a 1 p.m. ET against the Dukes.
