UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spiders continue their spring break schedule as they head to Harrisonburg, Va. to play their second game of the week against in-state rival James Madison University. Richmond is coming off its fifth loss of the season at No. 2 Maryland just earlier in the week. Senior Claire Cunniff scored four goals against the Terps to lead the Spiders.
After playing five straight home games, the Richmond women's lacrosse team heads to JMU to play its third straight game on the road Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m. ET. The Spiders have not seen the Dukes in their spring schedule since 2006 where the two teams met in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The then-No. 11 Spiders travelled to Harrisonburg in May of 2006 for their second straight NCAA tournament appearance. JMU snuck by the Spiders, 9-8 to move on in the tournament while the loss ended Richmond's 2006 season. Now-junior Mandy Friend scored two goals against the Dukes to help lead the Spiders.
Richmond is looking for its first win on the road Saturday against JMU. Junior Allison Furstenburg was quiet earlier in the week against Maryland but still leads the Spiders with 21 goals and 11 assists so far this season. Friend is not far behind with 19 goals and 14 assists for a total of 33 points in the Spiders' first seven games of the season.
The Dukes are 2-3 heading into Saturday's game. They most recently earned a win over Virginia Tech, 12-8 to earn their second victory of the season. Earlier in the season, JMU took down Longwood but fell in games to Dartmouth, Yale and Maryland. Annie Wagner leads the Dukes with 13 goals and two assists for a total of 15 points in their first five games of 2008.
Up next the Spiders return to First Market Stadium to take on Towson Saturday, March 22 for a 2 p.m. ET game.
