Spiders Open A-10 Play With Win Over UMass

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's lacrosse team opened its 2008 Atlantic 10 schedule with a win over Massachusetts, 17-12. Five different players scored for the Spiders. Juniors Lexie Marrocco and Allison Furstenburg both put in five goals a piece to lead Richmond in its third win of the season. Kaytlin McCormick, Melynda Zwick and Kathleen Typadis all recorded hat tricks to lead UMass in its eighth loss on 2008.
"It was nice to have 40 shots considering we only shot 42% today," head coach Sue Murphy said. "We had a lot of opportunities because the work we did re-defending, we did a great job with that today."
The Spiders out-shot UMass 40-26, hitting the back of the net nine times in the first half, and earning eight goals in the second. Massachusetts started off the day's scoring less than two minutes into play with Typadis' first goal of the day assisted by McCormick. The Spiders didn't take long to retaliate, answering with three-straight goals of their own.
Allison Furstenburg earned Richmond's first notch of the day off a free-position. The Spider attempted 10 total free-positions in the game, scoring off of four.
Claire Cunniff recorded her first goal of the game just over a minute letter off an assist from Mandy Friend. Cunniff finished the game with two goals, while Friend earned four assists on the day and picked up an impressive eight draw controls.
Another goal from Furstenburg with 10:26 remaining in the first half put the Spiders up on UMass, 6-3. The Minutewomen then put in four-straight goals to earn a one-point lead over Richmond with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.

The Spiders kept up the attack in the second half, maintaining the lead for the entire 30 minutes. Marrocco put on a show for the Spiders' fans scoring four of Richmond's last five goals.
"It was nice to have assisted goals today; we're moving the ball and seeing the open player well," Murphy added. "We kept control when they got close, it was great to see the maturity of the players, getting draw controls and keeping possession on attack."
UMass finished with six scorers, along with hat tricks from McCormick, Zwick and Typadis, Haley Smith, Holly Drown and Meghan Reddy eached added a goal a piece. The Minutewomen's goalie, Colleen Speth finished the day with 10 saves while Erica Marrocco recorded seven saves for the Spiders.
Richmond hits the road to continue its A-10 conference schedule in Philadelphia, Pa. Sunday, March 30 to take on La Salle at 3 p.m. ET.
