Mandy Friend Named A-10 Co-Player Of The Week

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Mandy Friend was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the week for the second time this season after scoring seven goals in the Spiders' two wins last week. Richmond rolled past American last Wednesday, where Friend put in four goals and had two assists for six total points then scored a hat trick and added an assist for four points in Richmond's win over conference-rival Temple on Sunday.
Friend, the native of Canandaigua, N.Y., has played and started in all of Richmond's 15 games this season. She is shooting an impressive 71.6% when her shots are on goal and has gone scoreless in only one Spider contest this season.
The midfielder has scored 43 goals and contributed 29 assists for a total of 72 points so far in 2008. Friend is averaging 2.87 goals per game and 4.80 points per game, the highest average in the A-10. Richmond has two more regular season games before heading into post-season play at the Atlantic 10 Championships at Massachusetts.
In the Spiders' first game of last week, Friend scored four goals and added two assists for six total points as Richmond rolled past American in a 20-12 decision. Against the Eagles, Friend also picked up five draw controls and four ground balls.
Friend also put up big numbers against conference-rival Temple over the weekend. In the Spiders' overtime comeback 11-10 victory over the Owls, Friend scored three goals including the game-tying goal which put Richmond back in contention with just minutes left in regulation.
The 2007 Co-Offensive Player of the Year also added an assist, four groundballs and four draw controls to help Richmond in its third comeback win in just four games. Friend currently leads the conference in both groundballs and draw controls per game with 3.67 and 4.40 respectively.
Richmond sits in first place in the A-10 heading into its last two regular season games this week. The Spiders head to our nation's capital to take on George Washington Wednesday, April 16 for a 4 p.m. ET game. This weekend Richmond will wrap up its home schedule as the Spiders host Saint Joseph's on senior day Sunday, April 20 at 12 p.m. ET.
