WASHINGTON, D.C. - Allison Furstenburg's seven points, on six goals and one assist, was not enough to lift the Spiders over George Washington as the Colonials netted a goal with 15 seconds left to edge Richmond, 11-10. Mandy Friend was the second leading Richmond scorer on the day with three goals and two assists for five points.
The majority of the first half was all Spiders (8-8, 5-1) as senior captain Jenna Hubbard netted an unassisted goal to start the day's scoring off. Hubbard got around her player to get open for the wind-up outside shot that jetted past Colonials' keeper, Caitlin Garman.
George Washington (4-11, 2-4) answered the first goal with three-straight in just one minute of play. Hayley McDonough scored an unassisted goal with 23:31 to play, then just 20 seconds later Taylor Donohue got on the board with a helper from Lindsay Melvin. Kristin Karcsh capped off the run with 22:29 remaining in the first.
Junior Allison Furstenburg's.
Furstenburg scored off a free-position and notched two unassisted goals before scoring her fourth goal of the half off a beautiful play. Mandy Friend brought the ball around the crease from behind the cage to find Furstenburg who caught the pass, then spun around her defender to get the open shot for the goal.
George Washington did not let the Spiders hold the lead for long as its attack started a charge of its own. The Colonials put four more goals in before intermission to head into the locker room tied, 7-7.
Nearly twenty minutes went by without a Richmond tally, while George Washington scored five. The Spiders did not earn their eighth goal until 10 minutes into the second half when Furstenburg under-moved her defender for her fifth on the day, tying the game at 8-8.
The Colonials then regained the lead less than a minute later when Katie Lilly found the back of the net off a helper from Laura Wunk to give themselves a one-goal cushion over the Spiders. Wunk added a goal of her own over ten minutes later to put George Washington up, 10-8.
The Friend-Furstenburg combination struck against less than two minutes later as Furstenburg scored her final goal of the game off a helper from Friend to bring the Spiders back within one.
A minute in a half later the duo teamed up once again, this time Furstenburg to Friend for the goal to tie the game at 10 with just under six minutes to play.
The next six minutes went back and forth as both teams had missed opportunities. Finally, just as the game looked like it was headed into overtime, Kristin Karcsh dodged her defender to send a rocket shot into the upper-corner with just 19 seconds on the clock, putting GW up 11-10. The Colonials picked up the next draw control to hold possession for the remaining seconds on the clock and for their second win in conference play.
Richmond will conclude its regular season this Sunday, April 20 at First Market Stadium against Saint Joseph's at 12 p.m. ET. The game is also the Spiders' Senior Day where the team's five seniors will be honored.
