Second Half Surge Powers Spiders Past Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - After being down by six at intermission the Spiders rallied in the second half to take down Duquesne, 15-13. Junior Mandy Friend paced Richmond putting in four goals, including the game-winner to put the Spiders up by one goal with 20 minutes to play in the game. The native of Canandaigua, N.Y. also added three assists for a total of seven points on the day.
Richmond trailed 11-5 at the conclusion of the first half. Duquesne started the game off scoring six unanswered goals. The Spiders finally got on the scoreboard 12 minutes into play when junior Lexie Marrocco ended the Richmond drought with an unassisted goal.
Duquesne out-shot the Spiders 28 to four in the first half and earned five more draw controls.
After trailing by six at halftime, the Spiders came out charging in the second. Claire Cunniff. Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, Ryan, finished with two goals on the day.
Senior Jenna Hubbard continued the Spiders' surge with two-straight goals of her own just a minute a part, giving the Dukes just a three-goal cushion.
Cunniff notched her first of the day to tie the game at 11 with just over 26 minutes remaining in the game off an assist from Mandy Friend. Just six minutes later, Friend put in her own goal to put the Spiders in the lead, 12-11 off a free-position shot.
From that point on, the Dukes would chase down the Spiders. Richmond held Duquesne scoreless in the second for the first 19 minutes. The Dukes would only score two goals in the second half while the Spiders put in 10 to earn the victory.
The Spiders had seven different players notch goals. Friend led the way with four while Cunniff added a hat trick. Ryan, Furstenburg and Hubbard each put in two a piece and Nicola and Marrocco each put in one to round out Richmond's scoring.
Richmond will return home, after playing two games on the road, to host American Wednesday, April 9 at 3 p.m. ET. The Spiders will return to Atlantic 10 conference action Sunday, April 13 as they host Temple at First Market Stadium for a 1 p.m. ET game.
