Friend Earns IWLCA All-Regional Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Mandy Friend used her junior season to set new standards for the Richmond women's lacrosse program. Friend has been named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association's All-South Regional Second Team. The native of Canandaigua, N.Y. also set six new records this season as a Spider, breaking four single-season bests and two career highs.
This is the third-straight IWLCA All-Regional honor for the midfielder. Friend was named to First Team in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. Also in her first two years at Richmond Friend picked up Third Team All-American and Rookie All-American honors her first year along with a spot on the All-American Second Team as a sophomore.
Besides earning national recognition for her play in 2008, Friend has set six new school records at Richmond. The junior is now the owner of three single-season records in Spider history. In 2007, Friend scored 62 goals, taking over the top spot from Caroline McGuire.
This past season, Friend broke two more single-season records taking over the assists and points columns. The midfielder dished out 36 assists, earning the top spot over previous holder, 2004 graduate Polly Purcell.
In the points category, Friend has set a new record in her three years as a Spider. In 2006, as a freshman, she earned 76 points to knock off Purcell. Then in 2007, Friend topped her personal best with 77 points. This past season, both Friend and teammate Allison Furstenburg surpassed the 77 points mark. Furstenburg recorded an outstanding 82 points while Friend reclaimed the peak spot with 89.
Friend not only impacted scoring in 2008, but her work all over the field earned her more accolades. The midfielder smashed the previous single-season draw controls record of 48, picking up 74 draws this past year. Also, on the defensive end, Friend set a new high in caused turnovers with 43.
With one year of eligibility left as a Spider, Friend has already broke two career records and is on her way to taking a third. With 36 assists in 2008, Friend is now tied with Purcell with 74 career assists. Adding her 89 points this season to her first two seasons, Friend has leaped past previous career points holder Caroline McGuire with an outstanding 242 points in just three seasons. The 2006 graduate, McGuire, is now in the second position with 208 points.
