LOGRONO, Spain - Sophomore Kevin Anderson scored 35 points and sophomore Kevin Smith had 14, including the last four in regulation, but Richmond lost to Caja Rioja 95-94 in overtime Monday night.
The Spiders led 25-20 after the first of four 10 minute quarters and had a 49-46 advantage at the half. In the third quarter, Richmond was outscored 23-11 while having to shoot on a rim that was bent after a powerful dunk by Caja Rioja's 7-foot Brazilian center Sidao in the first half.
Caja Rioja is a Spanish professional team which had two Americans on the roster, including a former Penn State Nittany Lion. The hosts opened up a 14-point lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Spiders responded with a 15-0 run led by three-pointers by junior David Gonzalvez (2), sophomore Justin Harper and Anderson.
Two key offensive rebounds by Kevin Smith in the closing minutes of regulation - with a putback and two made free throws resulting - helped the Spiders force overtime at 83-83.
The Spiders were plagued by foul trouble throughout the game, being called for 35 fouls, and lost Gonzalvez, Kevin Smith and Harper in the closing minutes of regulation and the opening minute of overtime.
Without three starters in the extra session, the Spiders fell behind by six. Anderson and Conor Smith made three-pointers as Richmond pulled within one, but Anderson's driving layup at the buzzer bounced out.
Anderson made 9-of-16 field goals, including 4-of-5 three-pointers and 13-of-18 free throws. He had five rebounds and three assists in 43 minutes.
Kevin Smith had 14 points, including two highlight reel dunks and grabbed eight rebounds. Harper had 13 points, making a 5-of-7 field goals, while redshirt freshman Josh Duinker just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes.
Gonzalvez had eight points, making 2-of-3 three-pointers, while Conor Smith had seven points on a pair of treys. Junior Ryan Butler had four points and senior Jarhon Giddings had two points.
The Spiders shot 48 percent from the field and 41.4 from three, making nine treys. Caja Rioja shot 49 percent from the field, made 12 three-pointers and out-rebounded Richmond 36-32. The Spiders committed just 10 turnovers.
Richmond, which is 1-1 on the trip, returns to action Tuesday night against Ford Burgos.
