BURGOS, Spain - Playing its second game in as many nights, Richmond ran into a hot-shooting second division professional losing to Ford Burgos 103-79 Tuesday night.
Ford Burgos, which has an average age of 27 and pays its players up to the equivalent of $130,000 a year, shot 62.9 percent from the floor and made 15 three-pointers. They made 29-of-36 two-point field goals.
"That is a really good team, we would have had to have been perfect defensively tonight to stop them," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "We still have a lot of young guys learning our defense."
The Spiders lost 6-foot-10 sophomore Justin Harper for the night when he rolled his ankle in the opening minutes of the game. Harper had scored in double-figures in the first two games of the trip and would have helped on the defensive end and with rebounding.
Coming off a 95-94 overtime loss on Monday, the Spiders struggled from the field in the first of four 10-minute quarters, falling behind 29-10. Richmond used a 10-0 run to cut the gap to nine in the second quarter, but Ford Burgos led 52-32 at the half and never looked back.
Redshirt freshman Conor Smith led the Spiders with 21 points, making 7-of-9 shots from behind the arc. Smith has made 15-of-23 shots from behind the arc for a 65.2 percent clip in three games on the trip.
Sophomore Kevin Anderson had 16 points, making 8-of-14 field goals and dishing out four assists. Sophomore Kevin Smith had 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a few more highlight reel dunks that made him a favorite of the Ford Burgos fans. In the opening minutes of the game, Kevin Smith went up for a dunk over Ford Burgos' 7-foot-3 center and it just missed. He also dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Anderson and Kevin Smith have scored in double-figures in all three games, while Conor Smith has reached double-figures in two of the three games.
Junior David Gonzalvez had eight points, five assists and four steals. Redshirt freshman Josh Duinker had eight points on 4-of-6 shooting with four rebounds. Senior Jarhon Giddings and junior Kevin Hovde each had five points, while junior Ryan Butler had two points.
The Spiders shot 49.3 percent from the field, making 33-of-67 shots. Richmond made 9-of-25 three-pointers.
Richmond is 1-2 on the European trip and will play Illescas Toledo in its final game overseas on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
