ILLESCAS, Spain - The Richmond men's basketball team put together its best all-around half of its European trip, out-scoring Illescas Toledo of Spain's Second Division 45-30 after intermission for a 91-77 victory on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Kevin Anderson scored 30 points and junior David Gonzalvez had 19 points as the Spiders finished their trip at 2-2. Anderson, who had a pair of 30-point games and averaged 23.7 points per game in the four contests, also had four steals, three assists and three rebounds.
"I thought we played well the whole trip, but we played especially well tonight," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "We defended the best that we had defended, in the second half."
"We definitely have guys who can score," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "For the most part, we have five guys on the court who can score. That makes it very difficult to defend. Our offense was good throughout and we played especially well defensively in the second half."
Richmond, which averaged 91.3 points per game in four games, led 26-19 after the first of four 10-minute quarters. Illescas Toledo, which had two Americans on its roster, would tie the game at 47-47 going into the half. The Spiders turned up the defensive pressure, holding Illescas to 13 points in the third quarter as they opened up a 70-63 lead after three.
In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter Richmond pushed the lead to double-figures and closed out the trip with the 14-point victory.
Gonzalvez had his highest scoring game of the trip, pouring in 19 to go with four rebounds and three assists. Senior Jarhon Giddings had 14 points, five boards and two assists, while junior Ryan Butler made four of Richmond's 10 three-pointers on his way to 14 points. Butler also had three rebounds and three assists.
Redshirt freshman Josh Duinker scored 10 points for his third time in four games scoring double-figures. Junior Kevin Hovde had two points, while redshirt freshman Conor Smith had one point and sophomore Kevin Smith had one point and five rebounds while battling foul trouble all game.
Of the 11 players who dressed in uniform on the trip, eight of them scored in double-figures at least once.
Sophomore Justin Harper, who had 17 points in the trip's opener, did not play against Illescas Toledo after rolling his ankle in the opening minutes of Tuesday night's game. Harper looked fine walking around the streets of Madrid during the day, but was held out of Wednesday's game as a precaution.
The Spiders 10-day trip comes to end Thursday, when they head back to Richmond. Classes start on Monday and preseason workouts will be getting going for the 2008-09 season. Check RichmondSpiders.com in the next few days for the announcement of the 2008-09 schedule.
"For us, this was a terrific trip, most importantly because how well our guys get along," Mooney said.
