With the win, No. 4 Richmond improved to 42-25 when playing as a ranked team (in the Sports Network poll) since the 1993 season, but an impressive 11-3 since the start of 2007.
The win gave the Spiders their third-consecutive conference-opening victory and fourth in the last five years.
The victory also marked Richmond's third-consecutive home-opening win.
Richmond snapped a two-game losing skid in the series vs. Towson, after the Spiders took the first two all-time meetings in 2004 and 2005. In fact, Towson still owns two of the four regular-season losses dealt the Spiders since Nov. 11, 2006 -- the other two are Virginia and Vanderbilt.
As a team, Towson accounted for just 55 yards rushing on 27 carries to mark the third-straight opponent under 100 yards on the ground versus Richmond. Elon had just 22 yards on the ground, while Virginia managed just 91.
Richmond had five interceptions in the game - that is half of what the Spiders had all last season - but three shy of the single-game school record. The Spiders had eight interceptions in a 1938 game at Hampton-Sydney.
Richmond's two interceptions returned for touchdowns ties a school record (at Boston U. in 1996 and versus Cincinnati in 1978).
The two interceptions each for Derek Hatcher and Justin Rogers were career highs, but one shy of the single-game school record of three held by six different Spiders (including head coach Mike London and assistant coach Scott Burton).
David Horton had the other interception - the seventh of his career -- and his second straight game with a pick.
John Crone carried the ball four times for 24 yards - nearly half of his previous career rushing totals. The senior FB entered the game with 40 yards rushing - 33 coming in a 2005 game versus VMI. He also scored his first career rushing TD.
Crone caught a one-yard TD pass to mark his second career game with two TDs. He caught two TD passes versus VMI in 2006.
Andrew Howard made good on all six PAT attempts, extending his school-record streak to 102 made extra-points. The junior has not missed in his collegiate career. The NCAA record for consecutive PATs made is 126.
Howard needs just nine more points to break the school scoring record for a kicker (188 points by Rob Courter, 1987-90).
