HANAHAN, S.C. - The Richmond women's golf team shot a 310 Sunday in the opening round of the College of Charleston's Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall.
The Spiders are in 20th place out of 22 teams in the field which includes 12 teams who competed in the NCAA Championships last spring. Richmond is just two shots behind Tennessee and Miami, who are tied for 18th, and three strokes behind 17th-place Mississippi.
"This is the strongest field of any tournament we play in, but I'm definitely pleased with how we played today," Richmond head coach Leighann Albaugh said. "We are going up against some of the best teams in the nation and the girls handled themselves well."
Sophomore Christina Gray, the reigning CAA Women's Golf Player of the Week, shot a 3-over-par 75 on the par-72, 6,159-yard Yeamans Hall course and is in a tie for 39th. Juniors Lauren Folgosa and Anne Sprick are tied for 67th after shooting 5-over 77s.
"Christina continued to play well and Lauren and Anne both had solid rounds," Albaugh said.
Sophomore Jillian Fraccola is tied for 94th with an 81 and junior Victoria Kidder is in 111th place with an 86.
The second round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Monday and the final round is on Tuesday.
