Sept. 6, 2008
Richmond entered the game ranked No. 3/3 in the FCS Top 25 polls, playing at its highest ranking since being No. 1 for five-consecutive weeks during the 1985 season.
The loss snapped the Spiders' eight-game winning streak in the regular season, dating back to Oct. 6, 2007 when Towson scored a game-winning TD as time expired. Towson is Richmond's opponent next weekend at UR Stadium.
Since Nov. 11, 2006, Richmond has dropped just four regular-season contests - two to FBS opponents (Vanderbilt and Virginia) and two to Towson.
Richmond has not won in Charlottesville since 1946, but narrowly missed a win in its last visit, falling 17-16 in 2001. The win extended the Cavaliers' lead in the all-time series to 25-2-2.
The 16 total points marks the lowest-scoring game in the Richmond-Virginia series since a 7-7 tie in 1943.
The shutout is the first posted by a Spider opponent since a 7-0 whitewash by Lafayette in the second game of the 2005 season.
The Spiders were limited to just 19 yards rushing on 27 attempts. It represented the least production from Richmond's ground game since 12 yards (20 carries) at Villanova in 2006.
Sophomore WR Kevin Grayson reeled in eight catches for 111 yards to mark his third-consecutive 100-yard receiving game (dating back to last season). The reigning CAA Football Offensive Rookie of the Year now has six for his career.
Sophomore LB Jordan Shoop recorded the first interception of his career today and his 63-yard return figures as the 11th-longest in Spiders¹ history. It stands as the longest return by a Spider since Jeff Nixon's 64-yarder vs. Cincinnati in 1978 and ranks as the longest return vs. UVa since Pittsburgh¹s Clint Session had a 78-yard return for a TD in 2006.
Junior CB David Horton picked off his sixth career pass.
