BLACKSBURG, Va. - Richmond entered Wednesday's game 12th in the nation in field goal percentage at 49.3 percent, but had its worst shooting night of the season at Cassell Coliseum in a 62-48 loss to Virginia Tech.
Richmond shot 28.1 percent in the first half and 31.1 percent for the game, making a season-low 19 field goals in 61 attempts, including 3-of-22 from behind the three-point arc.
"We just didn't make shots tonight, and maybe part of that is settling a little bit," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "Our guys were getting shots that they are used to making, but they weren't going in tonight. We came in as one of the best shooting teams in the country."
Richmond defense did hold Virginia Tech's high-scoring guard combo of A.D. Vassallo and Malcolm Delaney to 18 points after the two had combined for 53 points in the Hokies win over Virginia on Saturday.
"We did a very good job on A.D. and Delaney," Mooney said. "So much of the game plan is about them, so that might have opened up some passing lanes and allowed some other guys to score."
Delaney led the Hokies with 12 points, while Jeff Allen had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. J.T. Thompson added 10 points.
The Spiders did hold Virginia Tech to 21-second half points after allowing 41 points before the break.
Richmond had only player in double-figures for the first time this season. Sophomore Kevin Anderson led the Spiders with 11 points, nine of them coming in the second half. Junior David Gonzalvez had his 16-game double-figure scoring streak snapped as he finished with nine points. Redshirt freshman Josh Duinker also had nine points.
The Spiders return to conference play on Saturday when they host St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
