PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
A 19-2 second half run by Saint Joseph's (9-9, 1-2) sunk Richmond (14-4, 2-1) 70-42, Saturday night at Philadelphia University. The Hawks shot 54 percent from the field.
The game was tight for the first 20 minutes of play, as neither team led by more than six points. Saint Joseph's edged ahead 27-24 after two made free-throws by Ashley Logue at the 1:19 mark. The Spiders fought back with a made free throw by senior Augustina Zygaite and a jumper at the buzzer by freshman Sam Bilney to knot the score at 27-27 at the break.
After a jumper by sophomore Brittani Shells at the 17:35 mark in the second half, the Hawks would go on to score 19 unanswered points in the span of nine minutes.
"We uncharacteristically played as individuals and not as a team today," said head coach Michael Shafer. "Our help defense did not do a great job and that came back and hurt us."
Saint Joseph's has won three of the last four meetings. The 28 point loss was the largest margin of victory for the Hawks in the series history.
Richmond returns to action Tuesday night when St. Bonaventure comes to the Robins Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
