ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Sophomore Justin Harper scored 19 points to lead four Spiders in double-figures as Richmond defeated Saint Louis 70-62 Sunday, handing the Billikens just their second loss in Chaifetz Arena this season.
Saint Louis (11-8, 2-3 Atlantic 10) entered the game 10-1 at home in the brand-new $88 million Chaifetz Arena with the lone loss coming in overtime to Kent State. But the Spiders jumped out to a 34-23 lead at the half and held on for their second-straight win and fourth win in the last six games. This is the first time since the 1991-92 season that the Spiders have won their first two conference road games.
Richmond improved to 11-8 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders host Saint Joseph's (4-0 Atlantic 10) on Wednesday in the Robins Center.
"This is a big road win for us, it's always tough to win on the road in the Atlantic 10 and they are definitely a tough team at home," Mooney said. "We really defended well and our offense was solid. That is a team that makes it tough to score on every possession and we handled that well."
The Spiders' 70 points were the second-highest scoring total allowed by the Billikens behind the 71 points Nebraska scored on Saint Louis. Richmond's eight three-pointers were the most allowed by Saint Louis this season.
Harper, who was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week earlier in the day after his 28-point, nine-rebound effort against Rhode Island, connected on 7-of-10 shots, including 3-of-4 three-pointers as he scored in double-figures for the third-straight game and the fifth time in the last six games. He also grabbed eight rebounds, giving him 17 rebounds in the last two games.
Junior David Gonzalvez had 15 points, freshman Francis-Cedric Martel had 14 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Kevin Anderson had 10 points.
The Spiders led by as many as 12 and then held off a Saint Louis run to win for the fourth time in the last six games.
Kevin Lisch scored 18 points and Tommie Liddell III had 13 points and nine rebounds for Saint Louis.
