RICHMOND - Despite a season-high 17 points from junior Danielle Bell, the Spiders (11-3) fell to No. 14/16 Maryland (12-2) 83-65 Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.
Maryland started the game on a 9-0 run, but the Spiders came to life after Johanna McKnight jumper.
"We answered back to their run," said Bell. "We kept the energy up and really competed."
The Spiders would start a 7-0 run thanks to a lay-up by McKnight at the 11:10 mark. McKnight's stifling defense resulted in a steal and another lay-up seconds later. Bell then followed with a three-pointer. Richmond would lead by as many as seven points four times before the break. Kristy Toliver scored a lay-up with 30 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 43-38.
Richmond led 58-54 following a Danielle Bell, completed a 20-2 run with 11 straight points.
"We had some fatigue shots towards the end of the game," said head coach Michael Shafer. The minute we relaxed, they made us pay. However, I'm proud of our 25 minutes of good basketball. Our players need to understand we need to play a complete 40 minutes. I believe they want to do that."
Sophomore Brittani Shells added 15 points. McKnight finished with eight points and three steals.
Toliver led Maryland with 21 points.
The Spiders return to action Tuesday night when Wake Forest comes to the Robins Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
