PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior David Gonzalvez scored a career-high 36 points, but the Richmond men's basketball team lost to Temple 74-65 on Saturday night at the Liacouras Center.
Gonzalvez scored 29 of his 36 points in the second half as he put up the highest scoring total by a visiting player in the Liacouras Center, which opened in 1997.
Gonzalvez made 11-of-16 field goals as he scored in double-figures for the 19th time in 21 games this season. He now needs just nine points to become the 37th player in Richmond basketball history to score 1,000 points.
Gonzalvez's 36 points were the most by a Spider since Greg Stevenson scored 38 points on Jan. 12, 2001 against McNeese State in the Robins Center.
After a defensively dominated first half that ended with the Owls up 16-13, Temple (12-8, 4-2 Atlantic 10) outscored the Spiders 58-52 in the second half.
Temple's Semaj Inge scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, while Dionte Christmas added 17 points, despite being held to just two field goals.
Junior Ryan Butler had 12 points and Kevin Anderson had seven for the Spiders (11-10, 3-3 Atlantic 10).
After Temple opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 24-13 lead, the Spiders answered with a 12-0 run to take a 25-24 lead on a three-pointer by Butler with 15:07 to play.
Then Inge scored nine points during a pivotal 20-6 run that gave Temple its largest lead of the game, 44-31 with 7:58 left.
Gonzalvez kept Richmond within striking distance, scoring 27 of the Spiders' last 34 points.
Juan Fernandez scored 15 points, Ryan Brooks 13 and Lavoy Allen had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Temple.
The Owls shot 38-for-48 from the line, while Richmond went 16-for-19.
The Spiders return to action on Wednesday at Massachusetts at 7 p.m.
