PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Richmond men's golf team has itself in position to win back-to-back tournaments after shooting a 293 to take the lead after the opening round of the Big 5 Invitational at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
The Spiders are in first place, four shots ahead of Yale and Cornell and five shots ahead of Cornell entering Sunday's final round.
Richmond has only one two tournaments in the same semester three times in school history, but after winning the Frank Landrey Invitational on Tuesday the Spiders could win two tournaments in less than a week.
"We got off to another good start today, which we have been doing all fall, but the key is being able to finish strong like we did last week," fifth-year Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "Winning two tournaments in the same week would obviously by a huge accomplishment."
The Spiders won the Big 5 Invitational in the fall of 2005 Decker's first season. Richmond won its third team title under Decker last week at the Landrey Invitational and junior Sam Beach won the fifth individual title under Decker.
Richmond junior Michael Shrader and freshman Daniel Walker are tied for fifth after shooting 1-over-par 72s on Saturday. Junior Robert Lindstrom is tied for 14th at 3-over 74 and Beach is tied for 21st at 4-over 75. Freshman Nick Austin is tied for 44th at 7-over 78.
The final round of the 36-hole tournament will be played Sunday morning.
