SAINT LOUIS, M.O. -
The Richmond women's soccer team battled host Saint Louis to a 2-2 tie in double overtime Sunday afternoon. The Spiders led 2-1 but a Billiken goal in the 88th minute sent the game into overtime.
Richmond struck first when Emily Dale netted a goal from Liza Koch in the 53rd minute. Dale scored off a deflection from the post at close range. Saint Louis countered 20 seconds later when Ashley Brazill connected on a Ashley Hayes pass.
"It was disappointing giving up the second half lead, but we played a strong game against a top level team," said head coach Peter Albright. "A tie on the road at SLU is a pretty good result."
The Spiders grabbed a 2-1 advantage when senior Kristen Stalter scored unassisted from six yards out. Stalter slipped past the Billiken goalkeeper and netted the go-ahead goal in the 57th minute. Saint Louis taillied the equalizer with just two minutes remaining in regulation when Susan Fredrickson scored from 25 yards out on an assist from Brazill.
With the tie, the Spiders moved to 8-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in league action. Stalter led Richmond with four shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco recorded eight saves in the net.
"Melissa played well in goal and we got another great game from Jenny Ruhe," said Albright. "All in all, it was a very good game."
Richmond returns to Ukrop Park Friday at 5 p.m. versus Duquesne as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
