AMHERST, Mass. - The Atlantic 10-leading Richmond field hockey takes its unbeaten conference record to New England to face two-time defending Atlantic 10 Champion and No. 16 ranked Massachusetts on Friday at 3 p.m.
UMass was ranked 10th in the nation after a 9-4 start, but opened conference play last weekend with a pair of losses to Temple and Saint Joseph's. The Minutemen enter Friday's game at 9-6 and 0-2 in conference play.
Richmond has won five of the last six games to improve to 9-7 overall and are 3-0 in conference play. The Spiders are coming off a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime victory over city-rival VCU on Tuesday in which Richmond trailed 2-0 with under seven minutes to play, but two Megan Thompson goals and another by Hannah Hess pulled out the win.
The Spiders and Minutemen have combined to win the last 13 Atlantic 10 Championships. Richmond had won five-straight before UMass won the last two titles.
After playing UMass Friday, the Spiders are off until next weekend when they play at Temple and Saint Joseph's to finish the season.
