WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Richmond jumped out to an early 13-point lead Thursday night, but William & Mary closed the first half with an 11-0 run and rode David Schneider's 25 points to a 78-71 victory.
Richmond junior Kevin Anderson led the Spiders with 23 points, which brings him 16 points from becoming the 38th Spider to reach 1,000 points.
Senior David Gonzalvez had 18 points, making 6-of-11 three-point attempts and senior Ryan Butler had nine points.
The Spiders (2-1) jumped all over the Tribe in the game's opening minutes, racing out to a 16-4 lead after a monster follow-up dunk by Darrius Garrett with 12:54 to play.
Richmond's defense, as in the first two games of the season, continued to make it difficult for the opposition to get good shots for the first 10 minutes.
But then things changed. William & Mary had eight points in the first 10 minutes of the first half, but closes the last 10 minutes on a 21-7 run to take a 29-28 lead at the break.
Richmond still had a 28-20 lead with just over a minute left, but the Tribe (1-2) made three three-pointers in the final 1:20 of the half to cap an 11-0 run.
William & Mary continued the run to 15-0 by scoring the first four points of the second half, before Richmond's David Gonzalvez hit one of his six three-pointers to pull the Spiders within one.
The two teams went back-and-forth with Richmond taking a 42-40 lead with 11:48 to play on a jumper by Geriot, but William & Mary answered with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 52-42 lead with 8:55 to play.
The Spiders were able to close to within six points with 2:54 to play, but Sean McCurdy, son of former Richmond star Bob McCurdy, drained a three-pointer to get the lead back to nine. Richmond cut the gap to five points on two occasions in the final minute, but William & Mary made its free throws to secure the win.
The Tribe shot 45.5 percent from the field and 51.0 percent from the floor, while Richmond shot 42.2 percent and 35.5 percent from three.
Richmond returns to action on Sunday hosting Chattanooga in the opening game of the South Padre Island Invitational at 5 p.m. in the Robins Center.
