UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Kevin Anderson became just the 11th Spider junior to reach 1,000 career points and Richmond's defense held high-scoring Chattanooga under 50 points in a 75-49 win Monday in the Robins Center.
Monday's game was the first of four games in the South Padre Island Invitational with the first two in the Robins Center, before Richmond heads to Texas. The Spiders host Longwood on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then play Mississippi State on Friday in South Padre Island, Texas. Richmond will then play either Missouri or Old Dominion on Saturday.
Anderson entered the game needing 16 points to reach 1,000 for his career and he scored 13 of those in the first half when Richmond jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led 40-24 at the break. After opening the second half with a jumper, Anderson drained a three-pointer from the top of the key with 18:38 left in the game to break 1,000 career points.
The junior from Atlanta made 9-of-16 field goals as he became the 38th Spider to score 1,000 career points. He scored 20 or more points for the 16th time in his career, including the eighth time in the last 11 games. Anderson, who also had seven rebounds, has scored in double figures in 49 of his last 51 games.
Of the 11 Richmond players who have reached 1,000 career points as a junior, two are on the current roster (Anderson and David Gonzalvez) and Dan Geriot is just 166 points away from becoming the 12th junior to reach the milestone.
Sophomore Francis-Cedric Martel had 10 points, while junior Justin Harper had nine points and six rebounds and senior David Gonzalvez had eight points, five boards, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Josh Duinker had seven points and junior Dan Geriot grabbed 10 rebounds.

Richmond's defense forced 23 turnovers, the third time in four games that the Spiders have forced 20 or more turnovers.
