STORRS, Conn. -
The Richmond women's basketball team (4-2) fell to No. 1 Connecticut (5-0) 86-37 Saturday night at Gampel Pavilion.
The defending national champions broke open a comfortable lead early, scoring the game's first 14 points. The Spiders got in the scoring column after an Abby Oliver lay-up with 14 minutes remaining.
"They had a lot of size on the perimeter which disrupted our guards," said head coach Michael Shafer. "UConn played well defensively. They do such a good job of executing they expose a team's weaknesses. They do the small things to win ballgames. They're not just the best team in America, but they also play the hardest."
Richmond could not overcome the hot start by UConn, eventually slipping to a 47-8 deficit with 3:32 remaining in the first half. The Huskies' success was due in large part to the long range ball as UConn sank a school-record 10 first-half three-pointers.
Sophomore guard Caroline Doty was a scorching 4-for-6 from behind the arc for 14 points before the break. Doty ended her night with a game-high 17 points. She led five Huskies in double-figures.
Junior Brittani Shells led Richmond scoring with 12 points. Richmond recorded a game-high eight steals.
The Spiders conclude WBCA Classic action Sunday at 2 p.m. versus Hofstra.
