UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Sophomore forward Sam Bilney will be sidelined the 2009-10 season due to a season-ending injury, women's head coach Michael Shafer announced today. The University will seek a medical redshirt on Bilney's behalf.
"My heart goes out to Sam," said Shafer. "She has had more than her share of injuries, but she is valiant and determined to get through this injury. She is one of the toughest and hardest working people I have met, so I am sure that she will be back strong and healthy next season. I just hate that, after going through a tough rehab last spring, she was unable to reap the fruits of her labor. She will be greatly missed, but her vocal presence will be with us."
Bilney, a sophomore forward from Mill Valley, Calif., appeared in and started 22 games and scored a career-high 13 points against Ball State last season. She was one assist shy from a triple-double versus UMass (1/24/09), scoring 10 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out nine assists.
Bilney suffered a season-ending injury at Duquesne, missing the last 12 games of the 2008-09 season. Bilney averaged 6.1 ppg and 3.7 rebounds per game as a freshman.
Richmond opens its 2009-10 season with Western Carolina at 4 p.m. on Nov. 13th in the Robins Center.
