Quick Slants:
Fourth-seeded Richmond continues the defense of its National Championship, hosting Appalachian State at UR Stadium Saturday, in an NCAA Quarterfinal rematch from last season.
The Spiders and Mountaineers -- winners of the last four NCAA National Championships -- are meeting for the third-consecutive years in the Playoffs. ASU won 55-35 (`07 Semifinals) and Richmond won 33-13 (`08 Quarterfinals) -- both games were at ASU.
Saturday's game marks the Apps first road Playoff game since the 2001 season -- all-time, ASU is 3-7 on the road in the postseason, while Richmond is 5-2 at home.
Richmond has reached the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth time in school history, but fourth in the last five seasons. The Spiders are 2-2 all-time in this round (0-1 at home).
Richmond is the only team in the FCS to reach the Semifinals in each of the last two seasons.
Saturday's game could mark the final-ever Richmond Football game played at UR Stadium as the Spiders are set to open the new $25-million Robins Stadium on campus next season.
Senior QB Eric Ward, who is 17-6 in his career versus Top-25 teams and 7-1 in the playoffs, is the 34th player in FCS history to surpass the 10,000-mark in career yards of total offense.
Saturday's game matches up two senior QBs with a combined 82 wins in their careers -- Ward (41) and Armanti Edwards (41).
The Spiders have 16 interceptions in 2009, with 15 coming in the last eight games.
With 15.5 TFL and 6.5 sacks, junior DT Martin Parker leads a Spider defense that ranks third in the nation against the run (66.58 yds/gm).
Parker was added to the final ballot for the 2009 Buck Buchanan Award, presented to the FCS's best defensive player.
Up Next:
The winner of Saturday's game faces the winner of the Montana/Stephen F. Austin game in the NCAA Semifinals. Montana would host that game should it win, while Richmond would host if the Spiders win and Montana loses. The Semifinals games are either Friday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN2) or Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. ET (ESPN).
