UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The women's basketball team (18-7, 6-4) hosts the Dayton Flyers (15-11, 4-6) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for the WBCA Pink Zone night. The Women's Basketball Coaches Association encourages fans to wear pink in support of breast cancer research.
Richmond is coming off a 59-54 win over Rhode Island Saturday. Sophomore Johanna McKnight added 15 points, going 6-for-7 from the field. The Spiders dominated the boards, outrebounding Rhode Island 42-21.
"Dayton is having a great year considering they are so young," said head coach Michael Shafer. "Dayton might be the biggest team we have played all year considering that they are so big on the wings and they have pretty good size inside."
Dayton is coming off a 78-57 loss to No. 21 Xavier Sunday. Junior Kendel Ross led Dayton with 17 points. Sophomore Kristin Daughtery chipped in with 13 points. The Flyers have won two of their last three games, with wins coming against Massachusetts and Fordham.
"Defensively, they do a very good job of playing team defense and protecting the paint, said head coach Michael Shafer. "This will be a very hard fought basketball game that will probably come down to a few key possessions. It seems every game with Dayton is down to the wire, as both teams compete very hard."
Richmond won last year's meeting 68-66, on a McKnight layup at the buzzer. Sophomore Crystal Goring recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Spiders return to action Saturday at Temple. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
