PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore Kevin Anderson scored a career-high 28 points and senior Jarhon Giddings just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds as Richmond defeated La Salle 62-53 on Wednesday night.
The Spiders won for the second-time in the last three games as they enter a four-game stretch against the bottom three teams in the conference standings, starting Saturday against Charlotte at 6 p.m. in the Robins Center.
Anderson made a career-high 12 field goals in 16 attempts as he scored at least 24 points for the second-straight game. It was Anderson's fifth 20-point game this season and the eighth of his career.
Anderson, who scored 14 points in each half, became the third Spider player to score at least 28 points in a game this season, joining junior David Gonzalvez (36) and sophomore Justin Harper (28).
Richmond led by five points at the half after holding La Salle to 18.8 percent shooting (6-of-32). The Explorers kept it close by grabbing 15 offensive rebounds before the break and making all 12 free throws attempts.
La Salle (14-11, 5-6 Atlantic 10) opened the second half on an 11-0 run to take a 36-30 lead. The Explorers led 38-32, when the Spiders (13-13, 5-6 Atlantic 10) went on their own 11-0 run and outscored La Salle 15-2 over a four-minute stretch to open a 47-40 lead with nine minutes to play.
La Salle would get no closer than five the rest of the way. Junior Ryan Butler made a three-pointer to push the lead to 10 (56-46) with 3:33 to play.
Giddings made all five of his field goal attempts and pulled down his second-highest rebounding total of the season (9). Giddings also had two of the Spiders' season-high 10 blocks. Sophomore Kevin Smith and Harper each had three blocks, while redshirt freshman Josh Duinker and freshman Francis-Cedric Martel each had one.
