PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
Senior Johanna McKnight scored her 1,000th point but Richmond (19-8, 7-5) fell to Temple (18-8, 9-3) 65-52 Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center. Sophomore Crystal Goring led Richmond with 19 points.
Richmond and Temple traded baskets in the first half, with neither team leading by more than four points. A McKnight lay-up with 2:40 remaining pushed Richmond ahead 26-24. After Temple responded with a lay-up of its own, Richmond entered the break with a 28-26 advantage after an Abby Oliver jumper with 11 seconds left. The Spiders caused 12 Owl turnovers in the first half and held the rebounding edge, 19-16.
"In the first half we were the aggressor," said head coach Michael Shafer. "In the second half, they were."
After a Kristen McCarthy jumper at the 18:43 mark gave Temple the edge, 30-28, the Owls never trailed the rest of the way. Richmond inched back to 39-37 after a Goring lay-up but couldn't seem to overtake Temple.
The Owls went on an 8-0 run to bolster its lead to 51-39. The Spiders went nearly seven minutes without a basket. Richmond fought its way back to 53-46, but the Owls responded with a Shenita Landry lay-up.
"We settled," said McKnight. "We didn't go at them. We should've made them do what we wanted to do, but we didn't."
McKnight's 15-point performance puts her career total at 1,009 points. McKnight is the 16th Spider to enter the 1,000 point club. McKnight also grabbed two steals in the game to place her ahead of Saona Chapman for sole possession of 10th place on Richmond's all-time career steals list.
"I'm so proud of Johanna," said Shafer. "It's a great individual achievement."
Temple's LaKeisha Eaddy led all scorers with a game-high 21 points. The Owls have defeated the Spiders the past four meetings.
Richmond returns to action Tuesday at Fordham. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
