UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Freshman infielder Adam McConnell was named the Atlantic 10 Baseball Rookie of the Week after batting .476 and scoring 10 runs for Richmond (7-0), which remains as one of just 13 undefeated Division-I teams entering the third week of the season.
McConnell, a native of Yorktown, Va., went 10-for-21 at the plate and led the team last week with 10 runs and four steals. He also played error-free in 19 chances in the middle infield, and keeps his 1.000 fielding percentage on the season.
McConnell played keys rolls in late-game comebacks versus Longwood and VMI. His RBI single in the top of ninth tied the game versus the Lancers as the Spiders struck for four runs in the final frame to win, 7-4. The next day, McConnell's run in the sixth inning tied the VMI game at 4-4 as Richmond rallied for five runs to come-back and win 10-4.
Batting .448 (13-for-29) this season, McConnell owns the team's second-best average among starters, while leading the club with his 13 hits and his six-for-six stolen bases. He has started six of Richmond's first seven games, splitting time between second base and shortstop.
Of the 302 D-I baseball teams, just 13 remain undefeated at this point -- Richmond, along with #1 LSU, #2 Texas, #10 Georgia, #17 Kent State, Wake Forest, Virginia, Ohio State, UNC-Wilmington, Cornell, South Carolina, New Mexico State and San Jose State. A handful of teams have yet to open their 2009 seasons.
Richmond is scheduled to play Tuesday at William & Mary (3 p.m.) before returning home Friday versus Seton Hall to start at 13-game homestand.
