Day One Complete At Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Richmond track & field team got its 2009 outdoor season underway Friday at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. Freshman Meaghan McGovern was fourth in the hammer, while sophomore Chris Eccleston was fifth in the javelin to highlight Friday.
McGovern's mark in the hammer throw of 50.68m was good for fourth place. She was followed by sophomore Monica Howard in 10th (43.45m), freshman Nellie Henigin in 23rd (35.73m) and junior Heather Roush in 24th (35.50m).
Also in the throws events for the women, Henigin was 12th in shot (12.06m), Howard took 18th (11.29m) and Roush finished 21st (10.98m).
Freshman Geneen Dore sprinted to an 11th-place finish in the 100m preliminaries with her time of 12.53. Freshman Andi Defonce was 19th in 800m (2:19.23), while junior Megan Ney collected a ninth-place finish in triple jump (10.75m).
On the men's side, Eccleston's fifth-place showing in javelin came thanks to a toss of 59.38m.
Action concludes Saturday at Wake Forest.
