Spiders Wrap Up Outdoor Season-Opener Saturday At Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Richmond track & field brought its 2009 outdoor season-opener to a close Saturday at the Wake Forest Invitational and sophomore Monica Howard highlighted the day with a fourth-place finish in the discus.
Most of Richmond's roster was idle this weekend in preparation for the Spiders' Fred Hardy Invitational next weekend at Sports Backers Stadium in downtown Richmond.
The Fred Hardy begins Friday afternoon and runs through Saturday.
Howard's discus toss traveled 42.74m, which was good for fourth in the event.
Junior Heather Roush was 12th in the discus (38.10m) and ninth in the javelin (38.96m). Also in the javelin, freshman Alex Oszustowicz was 19th (32.42m).
Other highlights for Richmond included freshman Geneen Dore's 12th-place finish in the 100m finals (12.67), junior Kerry Kelly taking 32nd in 400m hurdles (1:12.02), the women's 4x400m relay taking 20th (4:13.20) and junior Megan Ney finishing ninth in high jump (1.58m) and seventh in long jump 5.48m
For the men, freshman Devin Cassels was eighth in pole vault (3.70m).
