WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The women's basketball team (24-9) plays Georgetown (19-13) tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. in McDonough Arena.
Richmond defeated in-state rival JMU 59-57 after sophomore Brittani Shells hit the game-winner with two seconds left. Shells ended the game with a team-high 19 points. The Spiders advance to the WNIT quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.
Georgetown edged Wake Forest 72-61 Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Monica McNutt scored a game-high 23 points. The Hoyas have won two of their last three games.
"Georgetown is a relatively young team who has started to play their best basketball now," said head coach Michael Shafer. "They are also accustomed to playing good basketball teams as they have competed nightly in the Big East, which is one of the strongest conferences in America. They are used to these types of tournament type games."
Richmond is 1-0 vs. Georgetown in the WNIT. The Spiders defeated the Hoyas 79-65 March 20, 2003. Richmond holds a 6-5 advantage in the series. The two teams are meeting for the first time since 2004.
"Defensively, they are very active and aggressive. They will press us in some way for the full 40 minutes," said Shafer. "We have to keep our focus, be strong with the basketball."
If the Spiders advance, they face the winner of the St. Johns/Boston College game this weekend. Date and tip are TBD.
