WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Richmond (24-10) fell to Georgetown (20-13) 65-49 in the third round of the WNIT Thursday night at McDonough Arena. Senior Johanna McKnight and junior Danielle Bell led the Spiders with 13 points apiece.
Georgetown came out hot, going up 14-7 at the 13 minute mark. The Hoyas pushed the lead to 17-7 after a Rubylee Wright three-pointer with 10:57 remaining. Richmond fought its way back to a 20-14 deficit after two free-throws from Bell. Georgetown closed the half with a 10-0 run to push the lead to the largest of the half, 30-14.
The Spiders went over nine minutes without a field goal, and was held to a season-low 14 first-half points. Georgetown's pesky defense held Richmond to only four baskets and forced 15 first-half turnovers.
"The first half was the ballgame," said head coach Michael Shafer. "They were the aggressor. We were forced back on our heels. We were ready to play but didn't choose to attack."
After two free throws from McKnight, Richmond cut the gap to 15, but Georgetown went on a 6-0 run to take the largest lead of the game at 45-24 with 14:39 remaining in the game. The Spiders outscored the Hoyas 18-7 to cut the deficit to 54-42. Freshman Rachael Bilney drained a three-pointer to put the Spiders back to 58-47 with 3:43 remaining, but it would be as close as the Spiders could get.
"We had a good season," said McKnight. "Even though it didn't end the way we wanted it to, we did what no one expected us to do. I just want to tell my teammates to keep their heads up and don't doubt anything. Richmond will be back next year."
McKnight ended her career with 1106 points, bypassing Saona Chapman for sole possesion of 12th place on the Spiders' all-time scoring list.
The Spiders ended their season with the most wins since the 1988-89 season, and third best overall record in program history.
Georgetown was paced by Karee Houlette's 17 points.
