WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Allison Furstenburg scored a game-high five goals as Richmond downed American, 16-12 Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

"This was a hard fought game for us," said assistant coach Allison Nuzzi. "American came out ready to play today but we were really able to turn things on in the second half. We made a few adjustments on the draw control that really helped with possession and control on attack. This is an important win for us as we keep our momentum going into the close of regular season play."
American scored two minutes into the second half, but Richmond broke the game open scoring five unanswered goals to take a comfortable 12-8 lead. American fought back with two goals to cut the gap to 12-10 with 18 minutes remaining. Richmond regained control scoring two consecutive goals to go back ahead 14-10. A Leslie Fischer goal cut the Richmond lead to 14-11 but the Spiders put the game out of reach with two more goals. American would score once more.
Senior Mandy Friend followed Furstenburg with three goals and three assists. Senior Lexie Marrocco also added three goals.
Richmond travels to La Salle Friday for its last conference road game. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
