UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond will honor former baseball player and Hall of Fame member C. Porter Vaughan, Jr. with a pregame ceremony prior to Saturday's baseball game at Pitt Field. Saturday's game versus Duquesne starts at 2 p.m., with the ceremony set to begin approximately 1:45 p.m.
Vaughan, who graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Richmond in 1940, was a standout left-handed pitcher and hitter for the Spiders and still holds the Richmond records for both strikeouts and hits per nine innings.
Upon graduating, Vaughan played for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in the American League and then for Toronto in the International League. Following his baseball career, he served his country as a captain in the Army during World War II. In 1967, he started C. Porter Vaughan Inc., handling residential and commercial development as well as property management.
Mr. Vaughan served on the University's Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Athletic Council. He received the Alumni and Trustee awards for Distinguished Service to his alma mater and was inducted into the University of Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame in 1976. In recognition of Mr. Vaughan's contribution to the University of Richmond and The City of Richmond, today Saturday, April 18th will be declared as Porter Vaughan Day at Pitt Field.
