UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Women's head basketball coach Michael Shafer has been selected as a representative on the WBCA Male Coaches of Women's Basketball Committee. Shafer was also appointed to vote on the USA Today/ESPN Women's Basketball Top 25 Poll.
"It is an honor to be elected to serve on the WBCA Male Coaches of Women's Basketball Committee," said Shafer. "I am excited about being a sounding board and advocate for the male coaches who are committed to growing the sport of women's basketball. I am just proud to be able to give a little back to this game. I have been very fortunate in my career to work with many great student athletes and coaches and it is the least I can do to become more involved with the WBCA in their efforts to promote our sport."
The Spiders enter the 2009-10 season after coming off of one of the most successful campaigns in program history. Last season the Spiders posted a 24-10 record, marking the most wins since the 1988-89 season and third best overall record in Richmond women's basketball history. Richmond appeared in its first ever A-10 Championship game and earned the school's fourth bid to the Women's National Invitational tournament.
The Spiders open their 2009-10 season at the Robins Center Nov. 13th against Western Carolina.
