UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The Richmond women's soccer team (1-1) fell to the Hofstra Pride (1-0) 2-1 in overtime in the rain-soaked opener at Ukrop Park Friday night. The Pride scored in the 88th minute of regulation to send the game into the sudden victory period.
Richmond struck first when freshman Shondel Archer tallied her first goal of the season off a cross pass from freshman LeighAnne Baxter in the 33rd minute that gave the Spiders a 1-0 advantage. Hofstra started the second half hot by notching four straight shots, but sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Young was there to collect the saves.
With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Hofstra broke free from the stingy Spider defense and scored the equalizer when Tiffani Yovino flicked a pass from Jess Cranksaw into the left side of the goal. The Pride scored the game-winner in the eighth minute of the first sudden victory period when Courtney Breen scored off a rebound kick from Salma Tarik.
"It's disappointing to lose that way," said head coach Peter Albright. "We made a good effort but their strengths were evident. We need to do a better job of developing our depth. Hofstra did a better job of connection passes, which put them in better field position. We just couldn't hold on for long enough."
Baxter and senior Kelsey Rdzanek led Richmond with three shots apiece. Young recorded six saves in the net.
Richmond travels to Washington, D.C. to face the American Eagles Wednesday. Kick-off is slated for 4:30 p.m.
